Right now I’m sitting in the car,(have been for a long time and still will be for at least a couple of hours) on my way to sedgfield at an earcracking, jaw dropping speed of 80 km/h. I thought this could take a while so I thought I’d just get started on this article instead of procrastinate as usual.
Last week was awesome experience wise, I wish I could say the same for the wakeboarding… I started off the week at the wavehouse in Durban central and had a couple flowboard sessions as well as a skateboarding on the sick miniramps they have set up there.
The next day saw me up nice and early for a drive to Richards bay for a fox wakeboard demo that was going to be going down that day. By the time we got there it was well over 30C outside and the water wasn’t much cooler at 25. Perfect. A guy called Rob Hughes put us up for the day and let us use his boat for the demo, which was pretty cool.
The only thing I could moan about in R-bay would be the fact that everyone kept telling me that hippos, crocodiles and sharks dig the warm calm water just as much as I did. First I thought this was a load of rubbish, but I researched it, and it turns out the stories were true so I’m stoked I didn’t get chowed.
After R-bay I headed back to durban where the following day was spent Flowboarding, Skating and Watching Jack Parrow live.( Poe$ ja)
On monday I caught a lift through to sessions with Andrew Bourne my Cape Town homie. Nothing much was going on there because the comp only started on the Wednesday, so I decided to have a lol waleskate session with Matt Buys, which was a laugh, because Matt would always take his time picking me up while I sat there in the water crapping myself, imagining a hungry bullshark lurking beneath me.
The next day was a lazy one spent cooking a hearty breakfast and surfing at St. Michaels beach ( yes it has lots of shark nets so ended up not soiling myself, but just urinating in my pants.
Sessions started off pretty sick with everyone riding their boat sessions first, I rode ok with my hammers being a batwing to blind and some grabed flips and spins. Devon Nassif killed it with long locks and all stomping a 7, crow mobe and a 911 to blind.
Next were the rail sessions were everyone killed it on dc’s roof top rail, Dev got a wrapped front board 270 gap and David smith got a ts 270 on bs 90 out, where I managed to stick a backlip gap 270, 90 out. That proved to be all the riding done for the 2 day contest as the second day it unfortunately started pouring buckets in typical Durban style.
The results for sessions ended up with Nick Bensch 3rd, Dylan Mitchell 2nd and Devon Nassif 1st.
Next day, we missioned back to Durban for final day at the Wavehouse, where I managed to take one of the most epic slams on the flowrider, causing my lateral ligament in my ankle to tear, bummer.
Just a quick thanks to Jono from Fox for the sick trip and rad times in R-bay, as well as Dorin Bambus for putting up with Matt and I for a couple of days, Ryan at Wavehouse for being such a nice guy and Devon for letting me crash at his place while we were down the south coast!
So after writing all of that with the key pad on my phone I can say that…
(drumroll comes in here)
I am still sitting in the car traveling 40 km/h under the South African national speed limit, towards what has now become a fishing trip until my ankle decides to stop overreacting and get better.
The video Edit of the Durban trip should be up sometime in the new year when I get back.
Sweet
